NA MNT 3rd Ed. Program Update Released

Nailcare Academy Co-Founders Janet McCormick and Karen Hodges believe in keeping it relevant, so they regularly add to and revise their online training programs.

Discount Coupon Programs – Yes or No?

Should you sign up for a coupon discount program?

There are a number of 3rd party coupon and promotion providers and whether you use Groupon, Living Social, Spa Finder, Amazon Local, Google Offers or another brand, all can help you build your business.  The best use of these platforms as tools is when you are building a new business, launching a new service within your existing business, or perhaps rebranding. It’s not recommended that you utilize discount marketing for very long – your business will not organically grow and you’ll find your books filled with “deal hoppers.”  You want people to come, enjoy your space and offerings, and then be motivated to come back to you, directly, because they love their experience…not because they can get a service done for cheap!

Before you start negotiating with a 3rd party coupon provider

Do your homework

It’s important that you target your market carefully. Some providers allow you ZIP code targeting. Some have other demographic information they can provide to help you set parameters:  age, gender, history with the company, etc.  Some are not able to help you, but may have a larger following in your area. Ask lots of questions. And insist on true answers, not replies (“That’s a good question, I’ll tell you more about that later” is not an answer–it’s a reply.)

A good campaign, well planned can be very effective in bringing new souls through your door.

Plan Your Campaign

Before you speak to a sales rep about a coupon discount deal, decide how much you are willing to spend on an advertising campaign. Understand that these deals nearly always create a net loss to the business. In one example, a spa sold 1038 deals that created a net loss of $8.31 each. This meant the spa signed up without realizing they were committing to spending over $8K on advertising. ($8.31 x 1038 = $8,600+)

Understand the dynamics of working with online deal providers–the sales reps are commission sales people, and they only get paid if they sign up businesses. They are skilled at “closing the deal” and will use all the techniques they have at their disposal to get you signed up, as quickly as possible, so they can move on to the next client. Another pressure they are feeling is their manager is pushing them for content. The providers constantly seek fresh new deals to offer their impetuous followers. They will  work with you–just be as insistent as they are. Negotiate every aspect: the # of deals, the amount they’ll go for, the % you’ll split with them, when you’ll be paid…every single thing. If you ask them for something and they say “No, we can’t do that,” simply say, “OK, that’s a deal breaker for me, thank you for your time” and move to end the call. They will not let you get away! Trust!

Plan Out Guest Services

Once you’ve chosen a deal provider and set up a campaign, make sure you are fully ready to perform. Stock your cupboards. Make sure staff is all on board. Write scripts–talking points–to go over with each client who enters.

  • Greet and welcome each guest
  • Be prepared to give each guest a tour of the facility – cross promote other services
  • Have a sign in sheet harvesting contact information
  • Mention all the services you provide
  • Offer a beverage
  • Perform their services with your very best efforts
  • Invite them to rebook directly with you
  • Offer an incentive for them to come back (it doesn’t need to exactly echo the deal they purchased!)
  • Ask them to refer you to their friends (make it easy–give them some of your cards and a brochure)
  • Give them a promotional item to take with them that’ll remind them of their experience with you
  • Send a follow up email (per the sign-in sheet)

Summary

Things to do:

  • Plan your campaign – who will you target? How much will you “spend” on marketing?
  • Limit the number of deals you allow to be sold.
  • Set the pricing on your FULL top-of-the-line service prices, not on an already discounted package price.
  • Negotiate a greater split % – if your sales person balks, ask to speak with another sales rep.
  • Insist that you review the copy of the deal before it is published–one spa campaign talked about “soaking your little piggies”–not the image a day spa wants to convey.
  • Manage your booking. You have no chance of bringing them back a second time if you make them feel rushed or if you can’t take care of them properly.
  • Limit the number of “deal” appointments you make each week, leaving enough time for your regular clients and for rebooking those who enjoy their first experience with you.
  • If you are an owner building clientele for your business, don’t expect your staff to “eat” the cost of performing the services without being paid their full due. Your calculations should include labor costs when you’re figuring out the cost per service.
  • If you are a booth renter or a sole proprietor, make sure your monthly bills will be covered without the small amount of income created by a campaign.
  • Make every guest feel welcomed and provide an extraordinary experience for them. You’ve invested a lot to get them there, so make sure they leave with a great impression.
  • Do adjunct marketing when they are in your salon–give them a tour and explain all that you offer. Give them printed incentives (coupons or referral program cards).

Things to avoid:

  • Don’t agree to a sales campaign based on a time-frame with no limits on the numbers sold.
  • Don’t cave in to high pressure–the sales reps are on commission and they are highly motivated to make the most possible commission for the time they spend talking to each business.
  • Don’t sign the contract immediately. Take the time to sleep on it. The sales rep will create urgency but the only true urgency is their commission check.
  • Don’t lose control of your schedule. Deal buyers are impulsive. You will hear crazy stories to get you to book them right now–brides (“The wedding is tomorrow!”), birthday gifts, dinner parties, boyfriend coming home from Iraq…and on and on. Take the emotion out of it, and book responsibly.

Stand firm or risk it all.

Be sure of yourself – your offerings and your capabilities. Don’t give into sales pressure or client pressure because you want to provide the best possible experience for each guest. If someone asks you to go outside your established boundaries, ask yourself “will this help me provide a great experience for all my guests?” If the answer is “no”…then the answer should be “no.”

A Living Document – History of the ANT

Nailcare Academy is proud to announce its 4th Edition of the Advanced Nail Technician Certification Program.

Co-Founders Janet McCormick and Karen Hodges announce the release of their 4th Edition of their trademarked ANTTM certification program this fall.  “I’m just so happy with the updates we’ve been able to make. As we teach the course over the months, we become aware of new studies, new products and new protocols, so we update our training programs every 2 years to keep them relevant,” shares McCormick.

This course of study was originally inspired by the desire to help nail technicians work at a higher level of professionalism, and therefore to command a higher rate of pay. Over the years it has been a living document with many revisions and upgrades, but the underlying focus has been based on the growing need for safe, healthful foot care for three increasing population sectors:

  • The chronically ill – according to the CDC, more than half of adult Americans have one or more chronic illnesses, of which, the most devastatingly dangerous, in terms of foot care, is diabetes.
  • The fragile elderly – ‘Boomers, the largest population sector in America, have passed the threshold of age 65.
  • Those who have become fearful – due to the constant media coverage of injuries in nail shops.

Certified Advanced Nail Technicians set themselves and their services apart from the “ordinary” nail experience by becoming “extraordinary” at what they do. They do things in a visibly different manner, and their clients immediately notice and appreciate the difference.

Originally written in 2007-2008, McCormick developed the course when she was brought on board as a partner at Medinail Learning Center to expand a new emerging credential: the “Medical Nail Technician.” The three original podiatrist-conceived modules of the MNT were not easy for nail technicians to navigate and McCormick’s grasp of the disparity in training from state to state — anywhere from 150 hours to 6oo hours — made the need clear for a level playing field for nail techs to proceed to the MNT.  She utilized her degree in Adult Vocational Learning to conceive of a bridge course and named it the Advanced Nail Technician (ANT) and insisted on requiring nail technicians take the ANT as a prerequisite to the MNT.

As time went by, as often happens in business partnerships, the goals and focus of the partners change, and McCormick elected to leave Medinail in the summer of 2014. Over the next few months, she and her former partner negotiated an agreement, and she left with her copyrighted work product to partner with nail industry educator and veteran, Karen Hodges. Together they launched the Nailcare Academy and completely revised and revamped the ANT program in a much better format to be delivered by a cutting edge web Learning Management System platform.
The program has been since been revised and updated in 2016, and again this fall, and is helping nail techs work at a much higher standard.

Hodges states, “From the moment you enter a salon or spa which has the ANT program in place, you will know you are in good hands!  The practice of ‘Hi….have a seat, what color do you want?’ has been replaced with a comprehensive intake and consultation process. Each client’s health concerns are taken into account before the first drop of water hits the pedicure bowl.” This difference will grant nail technicians much higher status and prestige in the eyes of their clients, and it’s been demonstrated will never leave for another salon. “There are clients out there that are happy to pay for ‘foot care’ versus ‘fast care.’  We know some of our ANTs are making in the six figures, because they have taken what they’ve learned and hustled.”

The ANT program is made up of 10 modules of theory, with solid adult learning principles in each module. For example, once a module has been viewed, the learning is reinforced with Study Questions which require the student to utilize the module search feature to organize their answers. After viewing all 10 modules, and the downloadable Handbook which accompanies the course, there is a comprehensive exam based on 100 random questions taken from the question data base.  Each person has 2 attempts to pass the exam, and once they have, they are eligible to purchase their Certification Packet. Each layer of learning is a building block for the next, just as the ANT is the first step toward achieving status as an MNT.

AHP – Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide for the Salon and Spa

Disinfection of implements and surfaces is very important when performing direct-touch services on another person, no matter the industry. For that reason, infection control is a serious responsibility for the professionals in our industry, one that is poorly performed by many though with strict adherence by others. Those who adhere to proper levels of infection control want good and reliable products, while ease of use and safety are important, also.

We, at Nailcare Academy have been waiting for the Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP) disinfectant to be approved in the US for years! AHP disinfection products (Rejuvenate™ and Prevention™ HLD8) are manufactured by Virox Technologies, Inc., and are now available for the beauty industry in both surface and immersion products. The Virox AHP products have the highest approval available – EPA and FDA approval, for use in the medical, dental and beauty industries.

Following are some benefits of AHP:

  1. Prevention HDL8TM from Virox does not need dilution for high-level disinfection of implements – it is full strength so the dangers of incorrect dilution are gone. Just pour and go! One of the problems in our industry in implementing infection control is correct dilution of our disinfection products in water.
  2. The necessary change of Prevention HDL8TM  immersion liquid is approved for 21 days – no more changing it every day. Our industry is well known for our “forgetting” to change the disinfectant. Test strips are also available to check the efficacy of the immersion product along the way.
  3. At last! A non-toxic-to-the-environment (and to us) disinfectant – when you put this product down the drain it breaks down into water and oxygen. No other disinfection product is that safe. Our prior products were dangerous to put down the drain, and PPEs were an absolute must in using them. Now you use PPEs to protect you from dirty implements, not from the disinfectant.
  4. Eight (8) minutes immersion for implement disinfection – this is less time than the prior products. Prior products were 10-20 minutes for disinfection.
  5. The level of “kill” reached by AHP is higher than our standard salon immersion products, which has been defined by the CDC as “intermediate level”–this system meets the criteria for “High Level” disinfection according to the CDC.

Are there any concerns about AHP? In the past, some formulations have caused inferior metal implements to turn black. However, Virox has carefully calibrated their mixtures and if you “buy right” as we discuss in our programs, and don’t allow them to soak overnight, good stainless steel implements are unaffected by the AHP immersion products.

With the dramatic changes in health of the population in the US since 2000, many clients in our services are slow to heal or fast to become infected. If the person has even a tiny wound from a dirty implement, they may have severe consequences…and the possibilities of poor healing illnesses in the US increase yearly. For example, according to the CDC, in 2000 5.8% of Americans had diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. But in 2017, diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes was near to 17%. Diabetics whose feet become infected are slow healing or do not heal at all and may lose a toe, a foot, their leg or even their life. Nailcare Academy and the fabulous #footnanny, Gloria Williams announce:  Something Big is Coming!

Always considering safety a top priority, it was fated that Gloria and Nailcare Academy Co-Founder, Janet McCormick meet at NAILS Magazine’s Foot Forward Summit in Atlanta, mid-August. “All of my blessings always come to me this, way, so when I saw Janet and heard her story, I had to step in,” says Gloria, who witnessed Janet in the process of being turned away at her full hotel. She offered Janet the extra bed in her room, and the two barely slept for the brainstorming.

The first of what looks to become an annual event, the Foot Forward Summit was all about lifting nail technicians to a higher level of learning and therefore performing.  “Know better…do better” was the focus of many of the classes and workshops offered at the Atlanta event.  Janet and Gloria found much in common as they discussed the programs and the spirit of collaboration crept into the room.

This collaboration of woman-empowering and passionate mavericks in the beauty industry bodes good things for nail technicians and for their clients, as well. Since then, there are many plans afoot! (see what we did there?) Keep your eyes open for more news as plans become reality.

What is the GDPR?

In April 2016, the Parliament of the European Union adopted data protection regulation for every company that does business with its citizens. They created specific requirements which must be in place effective May 25, 2018.

Any company that stores or processes personal information about EU citizens within EU states must comply with the GDPR, even if they do not have a business presence within the EU. Specific criteria for companies required to comply are:

• A presence in an EU country.
• No presence in the EU, but it processes personal data of European residents.
• More than 250 employees.
• Fewer than 250 employees but its data-processing impacts the rights and freedoms of data subjects, is not occasional, or includes certain types of sensitive personal data. That effectively means almost all companies.

These regulations carry the force of law and incorporate very stiff fines for those who play fast and loose with website user data they gather. Some of the requirements are that the website must have and post a privacy policy explaining what data is collected, what is done with it and whether or not if it’s shared with third parties. New Course Launched – Change Your Career!

Nailcare Academy is so excited and proud to announce our latest course:  Nail Technicians Working with Physicians. 

This course is instructed by foot spa innovator, Denise Baich, who lends her personal expertise in setting up unique foot care facilities in collaboration with podiatrists and other medical providers. A licensed nail technician, ANT/MNT and trainer, Baich has much to contribute to the discussion about how nail techs can integrate with podiatry and medical foot care.

“Nail techs can wear two hats in a foot spa facility,” says Baich. “They can wear their nail tech hat in one area of the building, performing cosmetic nail services, and then they can move over to the medical side and function as a medical assistant working under the supervision of the podiatrist.”  She says there are some specific rules that apply, and of course you must always work within the scope of your license, and that of the facility. She discusses how to find out what those rules are for your particular location.

Also in Nail Technicians Working with Physicians, Baich discusses the various kinds of working relationships a nail tech might establish with those in the medical foot care community:  referral relationships, employment relationship, independent contracting and so on. She generously lends her personal experiences–negotiating salaries and benefits, as one example. She shares her ideas on the set up and equipment needed so that you spend your start-up dollars wisely. More salons and spas are incorporating “wellness” into their culture. ANTs can easily slip into this role.        

BE AWARE

Nail services have evolved over the years–the original “nail salons” were focused mostly on artificial nail enhancements, but today’s nail departments now encompass a wide variety of nail services. Not only are artificial nails a part of the service menu, but there are now slots for natural nails, pedicures, “spa” treatments such as hand facials and reconstructed toe nails. As an ANT, you can add soakless, safe “routine foot care” and become a resource for the elderly and those with special health needs.

As a part of wellness, you can be the first party in the team to observe and recommend additional treatments if needed: medical providers, orthotic specialists, physical therapists and so on. You have the luxury of spending more time with your clients than many other professionals, and you can get to know them and they become comfortable with discussing their little aches and pains–when they might not “bother the doctor.” As their confidant and advocate, you can steer them in a direction for relief and wellness.

TAKE ACTION

Take steps to develop this ethos in your work – create special brochures that discuss the wellness aspect of foot care. Did you know that the toes and toe nails are highly indicative of many health conditions in the body? You are in a position to demonstrate your caring by being educated and taking the time to explain why nail trimming must be done correctly on a timely basis, for example.

You can reach out to your target group of potential clients – specifically focus your marketing activities on wellness and foot health. Volunteer to speak at community events, have a table at a health fair or offer lectures in senior facilities.

Don’t forget to ask your current clientele if they know anyone who has a chronic illness…ANTs are specifically trained to help those who need them the most.

FOLLOW UP

When is the last time you looked at your client list, and thought…hmmm…I haven’t seen this person in a while? Why not take a few minutes and run through your contacts to see who’s missing? They might love to hear from you! Surprise them with a pretty post card with a hand written note.

A wellness attitude is rewarded by great response and loyalty, but you must extend some effort and commit to taking actions which enhance this aspect of your business.
